Dropbox has announced the phasing out of its password manager Dropbox Passwords. The company recommends users export their data to other similar services, as Dropbox Passwords will be permanently unavailable from October 28, 2025. This is reported by The Register, citing the Dropbox help center.

The service will be shut down on August 28, when the mobile app and browser extension will go into view-only mode, and autofill will be disabled. The mobile app will completely shut down on September 11, although data will still be accessible through the extension. The full shutdown is scheduled for October 28, when all saved accounts, passwords, and payment information will be permanently and securely deleted.

Dropbox explains its decision as a desire to focus on improving the platform's core features. In connection with the discontinuation of Dropbox Passwords, the company advises users to switch to the 1Password service. However, this option is not without technical glitches and requires a paid subscription after the trial period ends.

Dropbox Passwords, launched in 2020 for paid users and open to everyone in 2021, had a standard set of features: saving login details, autofilling forms, and notifications about leaks of confidential information.

By the way, Dropbox laid off 20% of its workforce in 2024, which is equal to 528 positions. CEO Drew Houston explained these actions as a need for optimization: "We are making more significant cuts in areas where there was overinvestment or insufficient results." The closure of Dropbox Passwords may also be part of this optimization strategy.
