The classic shooter DOOM has received new, unusual platforms for launching. In addition to the well-known experiments with launching the game on lawnmowers, power supplies and medical devices, enthusiasts demonstrated the operation of DOOM on another unusual device - an Aspire PIXO electronic cigarette. The game was also launched on a Casio scientific calculator. This is reported by VideoCardz.
Another working DOOM port on a calculator was reported by an enthusiast on Reddit. Such modifications have long been common among technical communities, where users create not only DOOM, but also other games and emulators, including Minecraft and NES. Such projects allow you to turn a regular calculator into a portable gaming device without using a smartphone.
The second experiment concerns the Aspire PIXO electronic cigarette, which costs about 30 euros. The device is equipped with a Puxa PY32F403XC ARM microcontroller, 64 KB of RAM, 256 KB of built-in flash memory and an additional 16 MB SPI flash chip. These characteristics turned out to be enough to run the game on the Aspire PIXO.
Although DOOM doesn't run natively on the cigarette yet, the modder was able to stream the game's image to the built-in LCD display with a resolution of 323×173 pixels. This was done using special firmware and a USB connection.
The modder has released firmware backups and a web tool called VapeCloudStreamer, which simplifies the process of streaming the image to the device's screen. The community is already discussing the possibility of creating a full DOOM port for the Aspire PIXO without using streaming.
Both cases demonstrate the technical capabilities of even low-power devices and confirm the community's interest in running DOOM on the widest possible range of hardware.
