Corning has officially announced Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2, a new generation of tempered glass for smartphones that offers increased durability and better drop protection. According to the company, this glass can withstand multiple drops from a height of 1 meter onto concrete, making it one of the strongest solutions on the market.
Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 is developed in collaboration with Samsung and will debut on May 13 in the Galaxy S25 Edge, which will be the thinnest smartphone in the Galaxy series.
The new glass is created using a patented glass crystallization method. This technology allows the force of impact to be dissipated along the boundaries of the crystals, which are intricately embedded in the glass matrix, preventing the formation of deep cracks. In addition, the glass surface undergoes chemical hardening using ion exchange, which creates compressive stress and increases resistance to damage.
Corning claims that the new glass outperforms competing counterparts in terms of strength and transparency, providing better display protection without compromising design.
