Codemasters suspends development of World Rally Championship rally games

- 1 May, 05:43 PM

British studio Codemasters is suspending work on rally games under the World Rally Championship (WRC) license. EA SPORTS WRC 2023 will be the studio's last game in the series.

In a statement, the studio said it will cease development of rally games going forward, and that the 2024 season, including the recent Hard Chargers Content update, will be the last for EA SPORTS WRC. However, there are no plans to close the game itself at this time.

"For now, we are pausing development plans on future rally titles. Rest assured, EA SPORTS WRC will continue to be available for existing and new players. We hope it remains a source of joy, excitement, and the thrill of rally racing. We've poured our hearts into making it for fans, and we know you'll keep the passion alive," the statement said.

In addition to EA SPORTS WRC, which is due out in November 2023, Codemasters is also known for other rally projects such as the Colin McRae Rally and DiRT series. The future of the team that worked on the WRC games is currently uncertain. There is speculation that the studio has already made cuts, as it was previously reported that Electronic Arts was laying off between 300 and 400 employees.

We remind you that Electronic Arts acquired the Codemasters studio in 2021 for $1.2 billion. Later, news emerged that EA decided to bury the Project CARS and DiRT series, and the British studio after that worked only on Formula 1 games and the aforementioned EA SPORTS WRC.
