Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 sold 3.3 million copies in 33 days
French studio Sandfall Interactive shared the news on social media that their debut game, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, has sold 3.3 million copies. The game took just a symbolic 33 days to reach this milestone.
In early May, Sandfall announced that the game had sold over one million copies in just three days after release, and that Expedition 33 was available on Game Pass on release day. The studio was even congratulated on this success by French President Emmanuel Macron.
Overall, such success is not surprising, considering that the game has received some of the highest ratings from players and critics in recent years. On Metacritic, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has an average score of 9.7 from players, while it has a 92 from critics. The situation is identical on Opencritic.
In the review from Mezha the game received an 8.5, where the only negative elements noted were the parrying mechanics and some other general problems with complexity, navigation within locations and an inconvenient menu. At the same time, in the review Mezha and others also noted the incredible music, deep plot, visual style, characters and much more.
Interestingly, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is the first game from French studio Sandfall Interactive, created in 2020 by mostly former Ubisoft developers. The game itself, which is a JRPG with turn-based combat, transports players to the world of Lumière, where they must lead Expedition 33 and destroy the Artist so that she can never paint death again.
