Google has announced that it is ending support for the Chrome browser on Android 8.0 (Oreo) and Android 9.0 (Pie). Chrome version 138 will be the last to run on these operating systems.
Starting with Chrome 139, scheduled for release on August 5, 2025, the browser will require at least Android 10. While previous versions of Chrome will continue to work, new features and security fixes will no longer be available.
Google encourages users of older devices to update to Android 10 or later to continue receiving the latest updates and security.
Android 8.0 and 9.0 were released in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Dropping support will allow the Chrome team to focus on more modern versions of Android that meet current security and functionality requirements.
As a reminder, Google has recently been rumored to be working on an alternative to Apple Handoff for Android. Users will be able to sync multiple devices with a single Google Play Services account. This will allow them to access the same apps, notifications, files, and media across devices, such as a smartphone and a tablet.
