Clean energy has reached a 40% share globally — Ember analysts

- 9 April, 04:16 PM

According to the latest Clean Energy Report by think tank Ember for 2024, the global share of low-carbon energy has exceeded 40%, a record since 1940. Hydropower was at its peak then, but global energy demand was much lower.

Solar energy is currently the leader in the clean energy mix, and it is sufficient to meet the energy needs of the entire population of India.

Europe leads the way in solar power generation, with seven countries in the world’s top 15, and Germany leads Europe with 71 TWh of solar power last year. Hungary has the largest share of solar power in its energy system, accounting for 25% of total consumption.

The total share of clean energy in the EU's energy mix was 71%, of which almost half was from wind, hydropower and solar. However, with rising temperatures and more heatwaves in 2024, CO2 emissions from the energy sector reached a record 14.6 billion tonnes.

Demand for energy, particularly clean energy, is likely to grow due to the development of technologies such as artificial intelligence, data centers, electric cars, and heat pumps, which have already impacted energy consumption in 2024.
