China has ordered tech companies to stop purchasing NVIDIA AI chips
China's internet regulator has ordered technology companies to stop buying NVIDIA AI chips and cancel existing orders, as the government seeks to reduce its reliance on American technology, Reuters reported.
The Chinese government's moves are in part a response to US actions that have gradually restricted Chinese companies' access to NVIDIA's advanced chips. Beijing wants local companies to give preference to products from domestic manufacturers.
A few days ago, the Chinese government accused NVIDIA of violating antitrust regulations. Now, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) has ordered companies like ByteDance and Alibaba to stop testing and purchasing RTX 6000D chips designed specifically for the Chinese market.
NVIDIA's recently launched RTX 6000D chips have been met with somewhat weak demand among Chinese companies. Many firms have decided to abandon the new products. Despite this, there were also companies that planned to order thousands of RTX Pro 6000D chips and had even started testing them before the CAS order came out.
NVIDIA, ByteDance, and Alibaba have not yet commented on these reports.
Amidst such interstate conflict and ongoing restrictions on NVIDIA, competition is heating up in the Chinese market. In particular, Chinese chipmaker Cambricon Technologies recently reported a 4,000% increase in revenue for the first half of 2025.
