OpenAI has announced a new feature for ChatGPT users on macOS — the chatbot can now directly edit code in popular development environments such as Xcode, VS Code, and JetBrains. This is reported by TechCrunch, citing OpenAI Developers.
This feature greatly simplifies the work of developers, as there is no need to copy and paste code for its analysis or changes. Users can activate the auto-apply mode, which allows ChatGPT to make adjustments without additional confirmations.
The new feature is already available to Plus, Pro, and Team plan subscribers, and will be rolled out to other user categories, including free access, next week.
This update builds on the “work with apps” feature that was launched in beta last November. Thanks to this, ChatGPT can now compete with other popular developer tools such as GitHub Copilot. The OpenAI employee also said that code editing will soon be available to users of the ChatGPT Windows app.
While the feature is interesting, it also raises questions about the security and reliability of code generated by artificial intelligence. According to some surveys, most developers spend a lot of time debugging AI-generated code and fixing vulnerabilities in its security system. While code written by humans is considered more reliable.
