OpenAI’s ChatGPT resumed steady growth in the second half of 2024, according to a new report from venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z). While it took ChatGPT nine months to grow its weekly active users from 100 million to 200 million in 2023, it took less than six months to double that number.
After launching in November 2022, ChatGPT became the fastest app to reach 100 million monthly active users in just two months. By November 2023, it reached 100 million weekly users, and by December 2024, that number had grown to 300 million, reaching 400 million in February 2025.
According to a16z, the initial growth was driven by the newness of the app, but the recent surge is due to the release of new models and features, most notably GPT-4o, which added multimodal capabilities. Following the launch of this model in April-May 2024, ChatGPT usage has skyrocketed.
On mobile, ChatGPT is also showing steady growth, with 5-15% monthly user growth over the past year. Of the 400 million weekly active users, 175 million use the mobile version.
Competitors like DeepSeek are also gaining popularity, reaching the second position among mobile apps in February 2025, capturing 15% of ChatGPT's audience. Despite this, ChatGPT remains the leader in the web and mobile segment.
