ByteDance, which owns TikTok, is developing its own mixed reality glasses
ByteDance, the parent company of TikTok, is working on mixed reality glasses. According to The Information, the device is being created by its subsidiary Pico, a manufacturer of VR helmets, including the Pico 4 model.
Unlike previous Pico VR devices, the new product should be more compact - in terms of size and weight it is comparable to the Bigscreen Beyond (about 130 grams). To reduce weight, the main computing part is placed in a separate module connected to the glasses by a cable. A similar solution was used by Meta in the Orion prototype in 2024.
Pico is also developing specialized chips for processing sensor data to reduce delays between user movements and visualization in AR.
The device's specifications and release date have not yet been revealed. The Pico headset is not currently officially sold in the US, and given the pressure on ByteDance over TikTok, a US launch could be difficult.
It was previously reported that Meta temporarily paused development of the Quest 4 after the release of the Quest 3S to focus on lightweight AR glasses. The company is also developing HSTN smart glasses in collaboration with Oakley.
