Opera has announced a new browser called Neon, which is focused on working with artificial intelligence and performing tasks on behalf of the user, such as shopping, filling out forms, and programming.
The browser is currently available on a waiting list. After the official launch, users will have to subscribe, but the cost is not yet known.
Opera Neon features three new sidebar buttons: Chat, Do, and Make. Chat is a chatbot that lets you search the web, get answers to questions, and get additional information about the pages you're viewing.
Do uses the Browser Operator AI agent, announced in March. This agent can perform tasks such as automatically filling out forms or booking trips directly in the browser.
The Make option lets you create games, websites, code snippets, reports, and more using text commands. Opera says these AI processes are run via a virtual machine in the cloud, so Neon can work on tasks even offline, and users can run multiple tasks at once.
While all of this sounds promising, such AI applications often fall short of expectations. Furthermore, Opera is not the only company working on AI agents for browsers. For example, The Browser Company announced an AI browser with agents that perform tasks on behalf of the user last December, and Google is also developing projects that will return search results and perform tasks using AI.
