Meta, OpenAI, and Palantir CEOs Join US Army Reserves
The US Army has created a special unit, Detachment 201: Executive Innovation Corps, which includes executives from companies such as Palantir, Meta, and OpenAI. The goal of this unit is to accelerate the implementation of artificial intelligence in military planning and operations, The Register reports.
Joining the new unit are Palantir CTO Shyam Sankar, Meta CTO Andrew Bosworth, OpenAI CTO Kevin Weil, and former OpenAI CTO Bob McGrew. They have been promoted to lieutenant colonels in the Army Reserve and will serve as advisors on specific projects to implement technology into military operations.
Palantir has long been cooperating with the US military, and last year it received a $480 million contract as part of Project Maven to implement artificial intelligence into military strategies.
Meta plans to collaborate with defense company Anduril Industries on the EagleEye project, which involves creating helmets, glasses, and other wearable devices with augmented and virtual reality technologies. These gadgets will have sensors to improve soldiers' hearing and vision.
OpenAI, in turn, is also involved in the military sector, changing its previous position of developing only non-military products. The company is working with Anduril Industries on military technology solutions, in particular on systems to counter drones.
Detachment 201 members will be able to work remotely and are required to work a minimum of 120 hours per year. According to Palantir's CTO, integrating technology into the military will allow for the combination of "American innovation with vital military missions," which, in his opinion, will be a key factor in US victories in the 21st century.
