Apple is developing smart glasses and its own chip for them — Mark Gurman
Apple is working on its own smart glasses with cameras, microphones, and artificial intelligence support. According to insider and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the company has already entered the active phase of creating the device, and its mass production could start in late 2026 or 2027.
Apple's smart glasses will have multiple cameras, microphones, and integration with artificial intelligence. It is expected that the device will support functions such as taking photos and videos, voice translation, scanning objects in space, and navigation. The chip being developed is based on Apple Watch components, but adapted for greater energy efficiency.
Apple has been exploring the concept of smart glasses for at least the past year. The company is not currently focused on an AR solution, unlike the Vision Pro or future AR glasses. However, Apple will continue to work on full-fledged augmented reality in the future.
The glasses project is codenamed N401. It is led by the team also responsible for new Mac chips (M6, M7), Apple Intelligence servers (Baltra), the Apple Watch, and AirPods. The team's goal is to turn these devices into full-fledged AI assistants.
By the way, Mark Gurman also reports that Apple is developing new Apple Watch and AirPods with cameras for AI.
