Apple continues development of ChatGPT competitor, but Siri's future still uncertain — Bloomberg

- 3 June, 10:26 AM

Apple continues to actively work on improving Siri, using large language models (LLMs), which should make the voice assistant more natural in communication and capable of more complex thinking. In parallel, the company is developing its own AI model designed to compete with ChatGPT, reports Mark Gurman of Bloomberg,

Apple is testing several versions of the model, ranging from 3 billion to 150 billion parameters. The largest of these runs in the cloud and shows performance close to recent ChatGPT releases. However, the model still has a worrying tendency to make up facts, and there are disagreements within the company about the future direction of development.

Apple is also developing a new Siri architecture in its AI labs in Zurich to replace the outdated and fragmented hybrid system that has accumulated over the years. The company is also testing a separate chatbot, codenamed Knowledge, that can collect and analyze information from the internet. Its development is being led by Robbie Walker, who previously led Siri.

However, the exact launch dates for the new features are still unknown. Apple is unlikely to present a clear plan at WWDC 2025, given the criticism the company received after the announcement of Apple Intelligence last year - most of the features never appeared.

Meanwhile, Apple plans to add Google's Gemini as an alternative to ChatGPT to Siri in iOS 26, and is also in talks with Perplexity to integrate their AI service into Siri and Safari. Incidentally, it was also recently reported that Samsung is integrating Perplexity's AI into its devices.
