The products of the Chinese company BOE, which manufactures OLED displays and has been supplying them for the iPhone 17 since July, will be banned in the US for 14 years and 8 months due to theft of technology from Samsung, SamMobile reports.
Samsung filed a lawsuit against the Chinese company back in 2023, accusing it of patent infringement. On July 11, 2025, the US International Trade Commission (ITC) issued a preliminary ruling, finding BOE and seven other companies guilty.
The ITC ruling states that BOE stole Samsung Display technology by hiring former employees of the South Korean company and using other methods. This caused Samsung millions in losses, which is why BOE's activities in the US are banned for 14 years and 8 months - this is the amount of time allowed for compensation for damages.
The ban period also includes the time BOE would have had to spend developing its own OLED display technology. Samsung Display has been developing its technology since 1997, while the Chinese firm entered the market 16 years later but immediately began mass production.
A US ban on BOE would mean that the company's displays would be unable to be used in any devices sold in the US. This includes the upcoming iPhone 17. The Chinese company is currently responsible for 22.7% of all OLED panels used in iPhones, even more than LG Display, which has a 21.3% share.
The final decision on this case will be announced in November 2025. If it remains unchanged, Samsung Display will benefit considerably over the next 15 years and could potentially strengthen its position as a display supplier for Apple along with LG Display.
In addition to Apple, BOE also supplies millions of OLED displays to companies such as Honor, Huawei, OnePlus, OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and many others. Many of these companies are not officially represented in the US market, so the Chinese company will definitely remain in business.
