Google is working on an alternative to Apple Handoff for Android

Apple has long offered its users the Handoff feature, which allows them to easily transfer tasks and various information between iPhones, iPads, or Macs, and now Google is preparing a similar solution. Android Authority found a mention of the development in Google Play Services v25.25.31.

According to the leaked code, Handoff on Android will work similarly to how it works on Apple. Users will be able to sync multiple devices with a single Google Play Services account. This will allow them to access the same apps, notifications, files, and media across devices, such as a smartphone and a tablet.

This discovery complements the previously mentioned App Cast feature, which could allow Android device owners to cast apps from one device to another. The system was also previously spotted with the ability to sync notifications, but at the time it was unclear exactly how it would be implemented.

Google has not made any official announcements or even mentions that it is working on its own Handoff counterpart, but the introduction of similar code in Google Play Services could indicate that the feature will be available on many Android devices, not just Pixels.

At the same time, Google is not the only one working on such an update. As reported in late May, Microsoft is preparing a Cross Device Resume feature for Windows 11, which will also work similarly to Apple Handoff.
