Despite the fact that the Soviet Union ceased to exist on December 26, 1991, the national domain .su, obtained by the USSR on September 19, 1990, is still used by Russians and other fans of the "sovk". But ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) plans to finally consign the .su domain to the dustbin of history. It is due to cease to exist in 2030.
The abbreviated name of the Soviet Union SU was removed from the ISO 3166-1 standard (containing codes for the names of countries and their possessions) back in 1992, immediately after which the five-year procedure for removing the . su domain was supposed to begin, but, unfortunately, this did not happen and the Russian Institute for the Development of Social Networks (RosNIIRSM) has spawned 111 thousand sites in the . su domain since 1993, while registration of new names is still ongoing, despite the fact that ICANN apparently still plans to remove it and registration of new names was supposed to stop in 2022.
The .su domain is actively used by USSR fans, cybercriminals, hackers, and scammers.
