This year, the Subaru Outback celebrates its 30th anniversary. And it seems to be giving itself a gift in the form of launching a new generation of the car. Moreover, the changes are radical: if the Subaru Outback began as a cross-version of the Subaru Legacy station wagon and continued like this for all these 30 years, then with the transition to the seventh generation, the Subaru Outback has finally turned into a large crossover.
The new Subaru Outback: not much longer, but much taller
The main feature of the new generation Subaru Outback was the increase in height by +5 cm: now we have a total of 1.73 meters! At the same time, other overall dimensions remained approximately within the previous limits: the length of the car is 4.88 meters, the width has increased slightly - now it is 1.925 meters; but the 2.745-meter wheelbase has remained unchanged. It seems that it is precisely for the visual demonstration of the increased height of the car that from now on the new Subaru Outback has received a design with massive elements, straight lines, and numerous angles.
First of all, the huge radiator grille shield attracts attention, then you notice the 2-story headlights (with round elements installed in the rectangular headlights), a solid line of lights is located behind, and the side surfaces are protected by large plastic linings. Traditionally for current Subaru models, the design is difficult to call attractive or stylish; but it is possible to call it practical and functional.
By the way, regarding practicality and functionality: symmetrical all-wheel drive in place, chain variator too, ground clearance even of the regular version of the new Subaru Outback reaches 22 cm, and roof rails can withstand a static load of 360 kg - probably, calculated on a tent with a place to sleep. Under the hood can be installed atmospheric 2.5-liter gasoline engine with a capacity of 180 hp or also opposed and gasoline, but already 2.4-liter turbo engine with 260 hp (currently the power values are given for the US specification).
The interior features a new central display and separate climate control
The interior of the new model has also changed radically. Instead of the classic speedometer and tachometer with arrows, there is a digital 12.3-inch dashboard. Instead of the integrated vertical display, which previously formed the central part of the front panel, a separately installed 12.1-inch display is now used to control the multimedia system. Ventilation deflectors are located under it, and even lower - a separate climate control unit. Yes, yes, Subaru is one of those manufacturers that until recently did not refuse physical buttons, and now returns to an even greater number of them.
Among other things, for example, on the steering wheel, where there is now an additional X - MODE button for controlling the all-wheel drive system with a new "center" lockup clutch, which promises faster operation. And the use of a steering mechanism with a design similar to the steering wheel of the Subaru WRX sports sedan promises better control clarity. In addition, the functions of the EyeSight system are promised to be expanded , which now has three cameras and the ability to semi-autonomously drive the car at speeds up to 135 km/h (though on certain designated routes). And a reduction in the level of aerodynamic noise by -10% and a general improvement in sound insulation are also promised. This will definitely be appreciated by both the driver and passengers - by the way, as well as the increased headroom due to the increase in body height.
And something extra: Subaru Outback Wilderness
Simultaneously with the debut of the new generation Subaru Outback, its most extreme version, designated Wilderness, was also introduced.
As has become customary for such special versions, the Subaru Outback Wilderness is distinguished by maximum off-road preparation: a special energy-intensive suspension and increased ground clearance (now 24 cm!), off-road tires on 17-inch wheels, even more black protective linings on the body and copper decor. In the cabin, the Subaru Outback Wilderness attracts attention with seats with Wilderness logos and copper-colored accent inserts. Under the hood is the always powerful 2.4-liter turbo engine.
For now, this is only the first information about the new generation Subaru Outback. Next, we expect the launch of sales in the USA and the debut of the European version - of course, if it exists. But still, if it does, then the preparation of a hybrid version of the car for Europe is not ruled out. And only then the new generation Subaru Outback may appear in Ukraine; as experience shows, this process can take a year or two. Therefore, there is time to think - whether to dream about a new Subaru Outback, or choose a car of the current generation.
