Debut of the new Audi A6 Avant: only a station wagon, but with a gasoline or diesel engine and front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive
It seems like we've been hearing about the new generation of the Audi A6 recently, right? Only then it was an electric Audi A6 with the additional designation e-tron, and now we're talking about a new generation of the Audi A6 - with traditional internal combustion engines! Although it couldn't do without the additional designation Avant - because currently the new product is only presented in the station wagon body...
More aesthetics, more millimeters
But it is a surprisingly good-looking station wagon: flared wings above the wheel arches, a dynamic slope of the rear roof pillar, narrow lights and a solid red line below them, almond-shaped headlights and a huge radiator grille - by the way, without any chrome. And many of the design elements of the new Audi A6 Avant station wagon are functional. For example, the radiator grille has two independent air intakes that can be covered by flaps - all for efficiency and aerodynamics! It seems to work: with a C d = 0.25, the new Audi A6 Avant station wagon is the most aerodynamic in the entire history of Audi Avant models.
Here's another example: matrix headlights (this is an expectation for a car of this class) allow you to choose the pattern of daytime running lights. Something similar has already been seen on various Audi models, but now the number of options for such patterns has increased - all for individualizing the car! Similarly, as the choice of ten body colors, several wheel rim options (18-21-inch), standard version or S line version. There is never too much of such beauty!
It seems that this is what the car's developers thought - and significantly increased its dimensions. Now the Audi A6 Avant station wagon has stretched in length to 4.99 meters (+50 compared to its predecessor), and its wheelbase reaches 2.927 meters. A significant increase in size promises a more spacious interior. Which, at the same time, has become more futuristic and technological.
After all, from now on, a rounded cockpit with a pair of displays is built around the driver: the smaller 11.9-inch one is used as a digital instrument panel, and the larger 14.5-inch display opens up access to various functions and settings of the car. In order not to offend the front passenger, he is offered his own 10.9-inch display. And let's also mention the HUD - a projection onto the windshield and a 9-section panoramic roof, the transparency of which can be adjusted.
The steering wheel is now cut not only from below, but also from above; the center console is completely covered with black gloss and has a mini-joystick for controlling the transmission; the ventilation deflectors have turned into narrow slit lines. Interesting futurism, but what about practicality? The Audi A6 Avant station wagon tries to meet all expectations, offering a 503-liter trunk with the ability to increase up to 1,534 liters. And it also offers…
Different engines, front- or all-wheel drive, new micro-maxi hybrid
The new Audi A6 Avant is built on the RPC platform, which means a longitudinal engine layout, front-wheel or all-wheel drive, regular or air suspension, and the option of integrating rear-wheel steering. Plus, buyers can choose from three engines: a 4-cylinder 2.0 TFSI petrol engine (150 kW or 204 hp), a 4-cylinder 2.0 TDI diesel engine (150 kW or 204 hp), and a top-of-the-line 3.0 TFSI V6 petrol engine (270 kW or 367 hp); the latter option comes with all-wheel drive as standard.
That is, the Audi A6 Avant station wagon offers everything you expect from a high-class German car. And even a little more. After all, the Audi A6 Avant station wagon has received the MHEV plus system: it is like a micro-hybrid with the usual 48-volt power supply from a 1.7 kWh battery; but now the PTG unit has been added - this is an abbreviation for Powertrain Generator . In fact, the new PTG unit is an electric motor-generator; however, it is installed not in the engine compartment, but at the output of the gearbox.
Working as an electric motor, the PTG unit can produce 18 kW (24 hp) of power and 230 Nm of torque. Moreover, it can either support the main engine during acceleration or work independently, ensuring low-speed movement exclusively on the electric drive - for example, when parking or in traffic jams. In addition, the PTG unit can also act as a generator for recharging the battery of the MHEV plus hybrid system. Thus, the Audi A6 Avant station wagon seems to be taking another step towards electrification; at the same time, without abandoning the usual internal combustion engines - this is such a versatile station wagon!
Orders for the new Audi A6 Avant are now being accepted in Europe, with the first units arriving in May. The starting price of the Audi A6 Avant is from 58,000 euros for the 2-liter petrol version.
