Not just The Mandalorian: TV series in the Star Wars universe worth watching

The last numbered parts of the films in the Star Wars universe were, to put it mildly, "not very". Fortunately, after Disney acquired Lucasfilm, in addition to the last trilogy, it released a whole series of series, both with live actors and animated – and there is actually some work worth noting here.

Series with live actors

The Mandalorian

Release years : (2019-2023) | IMDb : 8.6

The first live-action series in the Star Wars universe, The Mandalorian is also the most famous: at least its first season has been watched by probably all viewers who are at least somewhat interested in this franchise. The events of The Mandalorian take place five years after the last part of the first, classic trilogy – Return of the Jedi (1983).

The series follows a lone bounty hunter who protects a Force-sensitive child from the remnants of the Imperial forces. Baby Grogu, who belongs to the same race as the famous Yoda, was so popular with viewers that he became the real star of the show. The series received three seasons, and a full-length sequel, The Mandalorian and Grogu, is scheduled for release in the spring of 2026.

The Book of Boba Fett

Release years : (2021-2022) | IMDb : 7.1

A spinoff of The Mandalorian, the series follows, as you might guess, the adventures of the franchise's classic character, bounty hunter Boba Fett, who first appeared in the original trilogy. In the series, he tries to make a name for himself in the criminal world by seizing territory on Tatooine that was previously controlled by Jabba the Hutt. Despite its connection to the hit The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett received mixed reviews from critics and failed to gain enough popularity among viewers - so the series was canceled after the first season.

Obi-Wan Kenobi

Release year : (2022) | IMDb : 7.0

Another series about a canonical character of the universe, the events of which take place 10 years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005). The series shows the story of Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, who survived the destruction of the Jedi Order and rescues Princess Leia from the inquisitors of the Galactic Empire.

The lead role was played by Ewan McGregor, the same actor who played Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy; despite positive critical reviews, Obi-Wan Kenobi only received one season.

Andor

Release years : (2022-2025) | IMDb : 8.6

A prequel to the feature-length film Rogue One , which in turn was a prequel to the very first film, Star Wars from 1977. Rogue One is probably the best film in the Star Wars universe in recent years (despite the fact that it is "only" a spin-off of the main series), and Andor expands its story wonderfully.

The series shows the previous life of the main character of Rogue One, Cassian Andor (played by the same actor Diego Luna): who he was before he joined the Rebel Alliance and how he became the Andor we saw in the film. Like the film, the series differs greatly from the main series in its gloomy atmosphere and maximum "realism", so to speak, of the events shown - for which it received widespread acclaim.

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew

Release years : (2024-2025) | IMDb : 7.1

A slightly unconventional series in terms of genre, Skeleton Crew is completely frivolous and rather "teenage": Star Wars fans even dubbed it "classic Star Wars for kids."

Skeleton Crew takes place after the fall of the Galactic Empire, and the series tells the story of the adventures of four children who are trying to return home after unexpectedly going on a journey across the galaxy. The main adult role was played by the famous actor Jude Law, and in general the series turned out to be very dynamic and light.

Animated series

Star Wars: The Clone Wars

Release years : (2008-2020) | IMDb : 8.5

Already a classic, if I may say so, animation in the Star Wars universe, which began to be released even before the acquisition of Lucasfilm by the Walt Disney studio – it was created by George Lucas himself. The first five seasons were released on the Cartoon Network channel, later it "migrated" to Netflix , and a few years after its closure, the last, seventh season was released on Disney+.

The events of The Clone Wars take place between the second and third parts of the prequel trilogy – the series tells the story of Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and his apprentice Ahsoka Tano, who lead the Galactic Republic's clone army in the fight against the Separatist Alliance.

By the way, in the early 2000s, another animated series with almost the same name – Star Wars: Clone Wars – was aired on the same Cartoon Network, but it lasted much less and had lower ratings.

Star Wars: Rebels

Release years : (2014-2018) | IMDb : 8.1

Rebels takes place after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith and gradually moves forward to the events of the original 1977 film: the series shows the Galactic Empire hunting down the last Jedi while a new rebellion begins to form against it.

Star Wars: Rebels features characters from both the original trilogy and The Clone Wars series, which was canceled just before the release of Rebels, so it can be considered a sequel of sorts.

Star Wars: The Bad Batch

Release years : (2021-2024) | IMDb : 7.8

The Bad Batch is a spinoff of The Clone Wars: the series continues its storyline and depicts the end of the Clone Wars. The Bad Batch tells the story of a squad of clone soldiers with genetic mutations – they become unnecessary for the newly formed Galactic Empire, so they escape and start their own fight against it. The series received three seasons and was generally well received by both critics and viewers.

Star Wars: Visions

Release years : (2021-) | IMDb : 7.0

An unusual product for this franchise: Visions is an anthology of short episodes created by different animation studios, each episode has its own story based on the Star Wars universe and its own style. The first season was exclusively Japanese (which was a bit like The Animatrix), while the second became "international": episodes for it were created by studios from all over the world, from South Africa to Ireland (this is closer to Love, Death and Robots).

The third season is due to be released at the end of October this year, and once again exclusively Japanese studios worked on it – it seems that the authors did not like the experiment with the second season.

Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi

Release year : (2022) | IMDb : 8.1

The first part of the Tales trilogy, which takes place during the time of the sequel trilogy, Tales of the Jedi tells the stories of Jedi Ahsoka Tano and Count Dooku. In addition to it, the cycle also includes Tales of the Empire – about characters from the "other side", and Tales of the Underworld, which focuses on the adventures of bounty hunters in the criminal world. Unfortunately, unlike the successful first part, the last two were noticeably weaker.
