Quite often, ratings of electric cars are published based on their potential range: once the record was 500-700 km, today someone is already promising 1000 km. And what about ordinary cars? Moreover, such cars that could really accommodate a family and their belongings, cost $25-30-35 thousand in normal-sufficient trim levels, were equipped with an economical turbodiesel. The task seems difficult; however, I found at least five interesting options: Citroen C5 Aircross, Hyundai Tucson, Opel Grandland, Renault Duster, Skoda Octavia.
Citroen C5 Aircross: from 1.22 million UAH or $29.2 thousand – and up to 980 km of mileage
Quite large, spacious in the cabin, soft on the go, with a large trunk - all this has been said about the first generation Citroen C 5 Aircross. The successor has already appeared, but until it starts sales in Ukraine, until the first batches of cars arrive... So, you really have time to buy the current Citroen C 5 Aircross - especially since this is probably one of the last chances to buy a turbodiesel from the ex -PSA group before the total transition to hybrids.
Just such a 1.5-liter 130-horsepower turbodiesel crossover Citroen C 5 Aircross with front-wheel drive, according to the declared technical characteristics, promises us fuel consumption of 5.4-5.5 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. With a fuel tank capacity of 53 liters, this gives a range of approximately 960-980 km on one full tank of fuel. The cost of such a car starts from 1.22 million UAH or $29.2 thousand.
Hyundai Tucson: from 1.45 million UAH or $34.7 thousand – and up to 1,125 km of mileage
A similar format crossover C - SUV, and one of the largest in its class. Also pleasant to drive, with clear handling and quite comfortable suspension. Plus, the Hyundai Tucson offers a choice of several trim levels (you can find three-zone climate control, premium audio, front seat ventilation), and the economical 1.6-liter 136-horsepower turbodiesel can be combined with both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive.
For the diesel version of the Hyundai Tucson, fuel consumption is claimed at 4.8-5.2 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle, which with a tank capacity of 54 liters gives us a range of 1040-1125 km on one full tank. The cost of the Hyundai Tucson 1.6 CRDi starts at 1.45 million UAH or $34.7 thousand.
Opel Grandland: from 1.16 million UAH or $27.8 thousand – and up to 1,260 km of mileage
The history of the current Opel Grandland is similar to the history of Citroen : the car is completing its life cycle, the successor has already appeared and even arrived in Ukraine. Moreover, the successor came to us exclusively with one gasoline engine, while the "first" Opel Grandland offered several engines for buyers to choose from – including an economical 1.5-liter 130-horsepower turbodiesel.
So, for such a diesel crossover Opel Grandland, fuel consumption is promised to be only 4.2 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. Which, with a fuel tank capacity of 53 liters, gives a range of 1260 km on one full tank of fuel. The cost of a diesel Opel Grandland starts from 1.16 million UAH or $27.8 thousand; although in warehouses in Ukraine there are mostly cars in maximum trim levels with a price of about 1.3 million UAH.
Renault Duster: from 989 thousand UAH or $23.7 thousand – and up to 1060 km of mileage
Do you want the most affordable and “freshest” option? Then you should go to Renault dealers for the new Renault Duster in the version with the well-known 1.5-liter turbodiesel. True, such cars come only with “mechanics” and front-wheel drive; but they offer two trim levels to choose from plus the ability to add the necessary options.
For the diesel version of the Renault Duster, fuel consumption is promised at 4.7 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. Taking into account the fuel tank capacity of 50 liters, this gives a range of 1060 km on one full tank of fuel. The cost of the Renault Duster diesel crossover starts from 989 thousand UAH or $23.7 thousand; when buying under the Renault Bonus program, the price is minus 100 thousand UAH.
Skoda Octavia: from 1.305 million UAH or $31.2 thousand – and up to 1,100 km of mileage
How can we review family cars without the “canonical” Skoda Octavia? How can we talk about diesel cars without VAG technology? No way! So here is an option: a spacious liftback, a powerful 150-horsepower 2-liter turbodiesel, a fast seven-speed DSG “robot”. The usual “passenger” clearance is compensated by strong road holding, because the diesel Skoda Octavia promises to be the most dynamic and high-speed car in the selection – acceleration from 0-100 km/h in 8.5 seconds, maximum at 228 km/h.
For the Skoda Octavia with turbodiesel, fuel consumption is promised to be 4.1-5.3 liters per 100 km in the combined cycle. Taking into account the fuel tank with a capacity of 45 liters, this means the possibility of covering a distance of 850-1100 km on one full tank of fuel. The cost of the diesel version of the Skoda Octavia starts at UAH 1.305 million or $31.2 thousand.
Of course, one can argue about the accuracy of the promised passport fuel consumption figures or that no one will drive to the last drop of fuel. Similarly, one can argue about the maximum range of an electric car and the reality of the measurement cycle, as well as the need to calculate the minimum remaining battery charge. In addition: please note that for the calculation I took the fuel consumption figure in the combined cycle; but in the suburban cycle (long trip on the highway) fuel consumption will be somewhat less - that is, for each of these cars the credit limit of 1000 km on one tank is quite real.
