New movies and TV series June 2025
The first month of summer is officially here, and if you were hoping for a break from the big-name releases, you're in luck. Streaming services and movie studios seem to have decided that the best way to beat the summer heat is to crank up the tension on your screens to the max. On the menu this month: final seasons of shows where everything is on the line; the return of franchises that are older than some of our readers; and a few bold original stories trying to grab attention from the big names.
Movies
Slingshot
A group of astronauts embark on a deadly mission to Saturn's moon Titan and try to maintain control over reality.
Casey Affleck and Laurence Fishburne star in a sci-fi thriller about an astronaut whose mission to Saturn's moon Titan goes completely off-plan. When things go wrong in space, it's always interesting, especially when the main character starts to get the better of himself from loneliness and uncertainty. The main thing is that this doesn't turn into another variation of "Inferno" or "Event Horizon," although the space horror genre isn't exploited so often that it gets boring with repetitive plots.
Whether the hero will be able to cope with the mission and his own demons can be found out from June 5th.
How to Train Your Dragon
The story of a young Viking, Hiccup, who refuses to kill dragons, as all his ancestors did, and decides to befriend one of them, which radically changes his world.
Hollywood continues its sacred mission of turning beloved animation into boring live-action films. Disney has already desecrated most of its legacy, it's time for DreamWorks too!
This time, the magical world of Vikings and dragons was up for grabs. Dean DeBlois (director of the original cartoons) retained the director's chair, which gives a tiny hope that the Toothless movie won't be so "toothless" and will retain at least some of the cartoons' soulfulness. I've heard that these projects are being shot for a new generation, but 2010's How to Train Your Dragon still looks great from a technological perspective, and in terms of plot and emotion, it beats 99% of modern works.
But if you urgently need to go to the movies with your kids or you just miss this world of dragons, consider this project as a good opportunity to pass the time.
The premiere will take place on June 12.
Materialists
A young, ambitious matchmaker from New York City is torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.
A24, the studio that brought us “All the Time and at the Same Time” and “Solstice,” is back in the game! “The Materialists” is a romantic comedy from director Celine Sung (“Past Lives”). The plot centers on a professional matchmaker who starts a relationship with a very rich man, but still has feelings for her ex, an actor-waiter. Sounds like a recipe for disastrously hilarious and awkward situations. And considering that the main roles are played by Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, the film promises to give you a lot of interesting emotions. We are waiting for sharp dialogues, life dilemmas, and, perhaps, the answer to the eternal question: can money buy happiness?
The premiere will take place on June 12.
Elio
The film tells the story of Elio, an imaginative outsider boy who accidentally finds himself in an interplanetary organization with representatives from all corners of the galaxy. There, Elio is mistaken for an ambassador from Earth, for which the boy is completely unprepared. Now he must learn to find a common language with eccentric aliens, survive dangerous trials and finally find out who he really is.
Pixar is back with a new original story! And this time we fly into space with a boy named Elio, who accidentally becomes an intergalactic ambassador for Earth. The cartoon promises to be bright, funny and, as always with Pixar, with a deep meaning. Get ready to meet strange alien races, space adventures and, probably, another portion of tears at the end. Pixar has almost never created frankly bad projects and "Elio" is a real gift for connoisseurs of good cartoons from 0 to 99 years old. I, personally, am waiting for the cameo of aliens from "Toy Story", because the studio likes to insert various jokes and references to previous and future works.
The premiere of the new cartoon from the cult studio will take place on June 19.
28 Years Later
Nearly three decades have passed since the Rage Virus escaped from a bioweapons lab. Now under strict quarantine, some have found ways to survive among the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by only a single, carefully fortified bridge. When one member of the group ventures to the mainland on a dangerous mission into the dark heart of the infected land, he uncovers secrets and horrors that have changed not only the infected but also the other survivors.
A legendary comeback! Danny Boyle and Alex Garland are back together to tell what happened almost three decades after the events of "28 Days Later." Cillian Murphy is also expected to appear, at least as a producer, and maybe more (the zombie in one of the trailers looks a lot like the actor). Will the new film be as groundbreaking in the zombie apocalypse genre as the original? Will it be able to scare us just as much in a world where the word "pandemic" no longer causes surprise? Expectations are very high, let's hope the authors don't disappoint. And judging by the evolution of the film titles, expect a sequel to "28 Decades Later," "28 Centuries Later," and the finale to "28 Thousand Years Later" in the coming years!
The premiere will take place on June 19.
F1
When the team that brought us Top Gun: Maverick (director Joseph Kosinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer) takes on the task, you can be sure that something grand is in store. But the level of realism that the creators of the Formula 1 film strive for is impressive even at the production stage.
Brad Pitt plays Sonny Gayes, a 90s F1 veteran who returns to the sport to mentor young talent Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris) at the fictional APXGP team. And now for the main thing: forget about the green screen. A full eleventh team on the starting grid was created for filming! The film crew worked during real race weekends, including the British Grand Prix, and Brad Pitt and other actors actually piloted modified cars on F1 tracks.
To make all this as believable as possible, one of the producers and the main consultant of the film is seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. The goal is not just to make a film about racing, but to place the viewer directly in the cockpit of the car, so that he feels every vibration, every turn and crazy adrenaline. Expectations are incredibly high, because this is not just a movie, but an unprecedented technical and logistical experiment! The budget of the film was a whopping $300 million and this beauty is best seen in IMAX format.
The premiere will take place on June 26.
TV series
Stick
Owen Wilson and golf are a pairing we didn't ask for, but which Apple TV+ seems to consider its new "Ted Lasso." The actor plays Price Cahill, a former golf star whose career has long since sunk to the bottom, and who makes a living by running small-time scams and selling sports equipment. His life changes when he accidentally stumbles upon a young but incredibly talented nugget.
Sensing a chance for his own revival, Price takes the guy under his wing, and the pair, along with their friends, embark on a journey in an old van across the country, participating in tournaments. Instead of a satire on closed clubs, we are offered a classic sports dramedy about second chances, found family and the path of an underdog to the top. Critics say it is sweet, touching, but at times too predictable. Can Owen Wilson, with his trademark charm, pull off another story about hope and self-belief?
The first episode of the series was released on Apple TV+ on June 4.
Revival
One strange day in rural Wisconsin, the dead rise from their graves, looking and acting as if they've never changed. Now officer and single mother Dana Cypress must solve a murder case that has everyone, living and dead, as suspects.
This series, based on the comic book of the same name, offers a much more interesting take on the zombie apocalypse. Imagine a small town in Wisconsin, where one day everyone who died just... comes back. Not as hungry monsters, but as ordinary people, as they were, with their own memories and personalities. The plot centers on local police officer Dana Cypress, who is trying to investigate a murder in a town where anyone can be a suspect - both living and "reborn". The situation is complicated by the fact that her own sister is one of those who returned from the dead. Instead of a typical horror, we are promised a gloomy gothic noir detective, where the main question is not "how to kill them?", but "what the hell is going on here?". It looks like a mix of "Twin Peaks" and "The Revenant", which sounds much more original.
It premieres June 12 on Syfy.
We Were Liars
The story of 17-year-old Cady Sinclair from a wealthy family who spends the summer on a private island. After a horrific accident, she tries to remember the events of her past.
And here is the film adaptation of the same bestselling novel by E. Lockhart that once tore TikTok and book forums apart. The story of the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair clan, their private island, and a group of four friends, the "Liars," whose summer ends in tragedy and the main character's amnesia.
But the most interesting thing here is not so much the plot, but the presentation. The fact that the series had its world premiere at the prestigious Tribeca Film Festival this week already hints that this is not just another teen melodrama, but a project with some ambitions. Usually, such festival recognition is received by works that stand out either in style or acting. Now the main intrigue: will the series be able to shock the ending as much as the book.
The premiere will take place on June 18 on Prime Video.
Ironheart
Teenage genius inventor Riri Williams creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.
And where would we be without the eternal column "Another Superhero Project of the Month"? If you were interested in Riri Williams' character while watching the movie "Wakanda Forever", then don't miss the premiere on June 24 on Disney+.
I hope Disney at least paid the graphics specialists properly this time and the heroine's costume won't look so "blurry."
Smoke
Smoke is a tense psychological thriller based on true events. The series tells the story, first told on the popular podcast Firebug, of one of the most mysterious serial arsonists in California history.
The main role of the investigator hunting this elusive criminal is played by Taron Edgerton. His character, Dave Gadsen, investigates a series of strange arsons in his town and gradually begins to understand that a suspiciously large amount of evidence points to someone from his environment. The series promises to be not so much a procedural about collecting evidence as an immersion in the paranoia and moral dilemmas of a man who suspects those he knows and trusts of terrible crimes. This is a story about how easily one can be deceived and how thin the line between a hero and a criminal is. It seems that we are waiting for a dark and confusing drama in the spirit of "True Detective", only with a light.
The premiere will take place on June 27 on Apple TV+.
Continuation of series
FUBAR (season 2)
Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in action! The first season of this comedy-action series was a hit with viewers. So, we're looking forward to the continuation of the adventures of "Iron Arnie" on June 12 on Netflix!
The Bear (Season 4)
A year without the signature kitchen chaos and cries of “Yes, Chef!” seemed like an eternity, but the wait is almost over. Mark the date on your calendar: FX has officially confirmed that all 10 episodes of season four will air simultaneously on June 25th.
Squid Game (Season 3)
So, it's official: the third season will be the final one.
The second season, which aired in late 2024, left the main character, Ki-Hoon, at his lowest point after the failure of his rebellion. And now, in the final episodes, he will have to make a choice in a state of complete despair, because the game does not stop for a moment. The creator of the series, Hwang Dong-hyuk, promised that for the final chord he prepared “the most intense games that will show the deepest depths of human nature.” Brace your nerves, because it seems that the finale will force us all to reconsider our moral principles.
The premiere will take place on June 27 on Netflix.
