Intel’s head of data center architecture and head of Xeon server processors Sailesh Kottapalli has decided to leave the company and join Qualcomm as a vice president. This was reported by The Register.
Qualcomm has been studying the server processor market for several years, where profits are high and competition is low. Kottapalli has the skills to help the company succeed in this new industry.
In his farewell post on LinkedIn, Kottapalli does not specify what he will be working on in his new position. The Register speculates that he may become the head of a new server business, or join the work on artificial intelligence accelerators.
“The opportunity to innovate and grow while helping to scale new frontiers was immensely compelling to me – a once-in-a-career opportunity that I could not pass on,” writes Sailesh Kottapalli.
Regardless of why Qualcomm hired him, this is an important step, as Cottapalli believes that he has unique capabilities at Qualcomm that Intel does not.
