AMD Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX breaks Cinebench records after overclocking and consumes almost 1 kW

The recently introduced Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 line of workstation processors surprises with its equipment. The top-of-the-line Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX model has as many as 96 compute cores, 384 MB of L3 cache, 128 PCI-E 5.0 bus lines, and a TDP of 350 watts. An equally impressive price tag of $9999 initially determines the overall positioning of the processor.

But AMD’s new HEDT platform allows you to experiment with overclocking, which makes it possible to unleash the potential of the CPU. And as it turned out, the new Threadripper Pro also has something to surprise here.

Using the ASUS PRO WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI motherboard, American enthusiast Sampson tried to accelerate the Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX (2.5/5.15 GHz). During the experiments, he managed to get a stable operation of the 4.8 GHz chip under load on all computing cores of the processor.

For cooling, an air cooler was used, albeit a very specific one-a two-kilogram IceGiant Pro Siphon Elite with four fans. However, even such a cooler could barely cope with the main task. The processor heated up to 102C, consuming up to 980 watts of power under load.

But such “mockery” was not in vain. The overclocked 96-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7995WX immediately updated the records in the classic Cinebench disciplines. The overclocked newcomer scored 161295 points in the Cinebench R23 multi-threaded test, immediately 33% ahead of the accelerated 64-core predecessor Threadripper PRO 5995WX. And compared to the overclocked 56-core Xeon W9-3495X, the new AMD chip is 22% faster.

Obviously, the experiments with Ryzen Threadripper Pro 7000 are just beginning, as air cooling is only the initial stage. We are waiting for the next set records with liquid nitrogen and helium.
