WhatsApp AI creates an image of a boy with a gun in response to queries about Palestine

WhatsApp’s AI-powered image creation feature suggested stickers of a gun and a boy with a gun in response to the queries “Palestinian,” “Palestine,” and “Muslim Palestinian boy”, writes The Guardian.

The results differed between users during testing. However, in response to the three queries, the function created stickers that depicted weapons in one way or another.

The AI reacted differently to queries about Israel. For example, for the query “Israeli boy,” it showed children playing soccer or reading. For the query “Israeli army,” the function created stickers of soldiers smiling and praying, but not carrying weapons.

Meta, the company that owns WhatsApp, is aware of the situation and is working to resolve it.

“As we said when we launched the feature, the models could return inaccurate or inappropriate outputs as with all generative AI systems. We’ll continue to improve these features as they evolve and more people share their feedback,” said in the company.

By the way, it has recently become known that Meta is working on several AI tools for Facebook. One of them is supposed to help users write posts, and the other one is supposed to create images for profiles. The company has not yet officially announced these features.
