Mimimi Games, the studio behind Shadow Tactics and Desperados III, is shutting down

Less than two weeks after the release of Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, the latest game by the German studio Mimimi Games, it became known that it will be the last game in the history of this extraordinary team. The studio stops working.

Mimimi Games made a name for itself with a project Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (2016) that became a real revival of the tactical stealth strategy genre that was popular in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Players fell in love with Mimimi Games and they continued in the same spirit, reviving the legendary brand with Desperados III (2020). Both projects have exceptionally favorable Steam ratings of 96% and good sales, especially Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, but Desperados III’s sales are several times lower than Shadow Tactics.

Mimimi Games continued in the same spirit with Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, which many users call the pinnacle of the stealth strategy genre. But… despite the again high Steam rating of 94%, the game’s sales are several times lower than Desperados III. This is a very specific genre, and against the backdrop of high-profile late-summer projects, Shadow Gambit is very cool: The Cursed Crew simply got lost in the shuffle.

The main reason for the closure of the studio is the desire to pay more attention to families, which they have neglected for 15 years due to high workload. In addition, they mention the rising cost of producing games, the profit from which does not keep pace with development costs, while maintaining the quality of the final product.

Mimimi Games plans to gradually close the studio. The team is currently preparing a patch for Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, and the game will receive additional content. All employees of Mimimi Games will receive bonuses related to the game’s release and assistance in finding a new job. The studio’s games will remain on sale on all platforms.

It’s a shame, it seems that only a very small segment of players really need quality games. We will miss Mimimi Games.
