Man who stole Starfield could get up to 12 years in prison
According to the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office A Tennessee resident identified as Darin Harris has been arrested and charged with stealing and unauthorized distribution of videos from Bethesda’s upcoming game, Starfield. He also tried to sell unauthorized copies of the game before its official release. The man faces up to 12 years in prison. This is reported by PlayerAuctions.
Harris was arrested on August 24, 2023, on charges of felony theft of property and misdemeanor possession of controlled substances.
Police searched Harris’s home and found six copies of Starfield, one of which was sealed in a FedEx package (which he used to ship the copies he sold). In addition, authorities found three handguns and marijuana. Harris allegedly told police that he did not steal the games, but bought them from another person.
Darin Harris was arrested after the YouTube account DHavenShadow, which county sheriffs recognized as belonging to the man, broadcast 40 minutes of Starfield gameplay filmed on a cell phone. The video received 1 million views before being removed.
Harris is easily recognizable by his appearance and his GamerTag, which was present in the video (a genius, he’s just a genius). The guy managed to place several copies of Starfield on the Mercari online platform, where he estimated them at $200-650.
Now the failed pirate faces 2 to 12 years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. And that’s if the crime is not reclassified as a more serious one.
Starfield will be released on Widnows PC and Xbox Series S|X on September 6, 2023. Premium Edition owners will be able to start playing on September 1. To get access to the game 5 days earlier, Xbox/Game Pass owners can purchase Starfield Premium Edition Upgrade. The Starfield preview is already available on Xbox and Windows.
