Sega has finally bought Rovio, which created Angry Birds, for $776 million
The Japanese giant Sega Sammy has completed the acquisition of the Finnish company Rovio, which developed the Angry Birds game franchise. The deal was worth $776 million, according to Engadget.
Sega hopes that the acquisition will give both parties a stronger position in the mobile space. In addition to Angry Birds and its many spin-offs, Rovio is known for the puzzle game Sugar Blast and the detective game Small Town Murders.
So, with the acquisition of Rovio, Sega is getting more than just recognizable franchise games. It will have a ready-made infrastructure for developing, publishing, and advertising mobile games.
This means that it can immediately start creating mobile games based on its own intellectual property, such as Sonic, Samba de Amigo, Persona, Football Manager, and others.
We would like to remind you that the first information about the acquisition of Rovio appeared in January. Back then, the Israeli company Playtika was interested in it and offered €750 million, but the negotiations between the companies ended in nothing. The deal with Sega became known in April this year.
