Three of Reddit’s biggest subreddits have rebooted in the funniest way

Three major subreddits, r/pics, r/gifs, and r/aww, have relaunched after participating in protests against Reddit, but have only allowed posts about comedian and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver to be published, according to The Verge.

“As many of you are aware, we recently held a poll to decide on the future of the subreddit,” wrote r/gifs moderator u/IronSentinel. “This initiative was prompted by statements from Reddit’s CEO, who suggested that the desires of the platform’s everyday users were being eclipsed by those of moderators.”

The subreddits asked users to vote on two options: return to normal mode or allow only content featuring John Oliver. The results were convincing:

– r/pics: return to normal, -2,329 votes; “only allow images of John Oliver looking sexy,” 37,331 votes;

– r/gifs: return to normal, -1,851 votes; only feature GIFs of John Oliver, 13,696 votes;

– r/aww: return to normal, -2,691 votes; only allow “adorable content featuring John Oliver, Chiijohn [a mascot], and anything else that closely resembles them,” 48,506 votes.

In the end, John Oliver himself supported the users with his post on Twitter.

As you know, subreddits and moderators announced the protest action because of increase in API cost by Reddit, which the platform announced in the spring. The participants of the action decided to go private – some of them temporarily, and some – indefinitely. At peak times, more than 8,000 subreddits went dark.

For its part, Reddit has offered no concessions or changes to its previously announced policy. Although the company has decided not to charge for apps that focus on accesibility. At the same time, Reddit’s CEO equated moderators to ‘landed gentry’. So the subreddits decided to turn to the audience to guide them in the future steps.

Currently, more than 4,000 subreddits remain “dark”. In recent days, many participants have reopened, although some have done so under duress.
