Cyberpunk 2077 has received DLSS 3 support to boost frame rates

Cyberpunk 2077 gets support for Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) scaling technology from NVIDIA, reports The Verge. The update that adds DLSS 3 is already available for PC users, and it significantly improves Cyberpunk 2077’s frame rates at both 1440p and 4K.

DLSS 3 uses NVIDIA’s new frame generation technology, which is exclusively available on RTX 40 series GPUs. The company first demonstrated this upscaling technology when it unveiled the RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 GPUs in September, using Cyberpunk 2077 as a prime example for the frame rate boost.

The Verge tested Cyberpunk 2077 with DLSS 3 on an RTX 4090 and notes that the frame rate increased from 66 fps, Psycho ray tracing, maximum settings with DLSS 2 to an average of 103 fps with DLSS 3. That’s a more than 55% increase.

DLSS 3 frame generation creates brand new frames, not just new pixels, and can render additional game pixels to improve performance. However, DLSS 3 adds latency. NVIDIA combats this by integrating its Reflex technology to reduce latency and improve the response speed. However, players are more likely to notice increased latency with DLSS 3 in competitive shooters than in games like Cyberpunk 2077.

This new DLSS 3 support also sets the stage for Cyberpunk 2077’s promised Overdrive mode, which will improve the game’s ray tracing. NVIDIA also showed off some changes to Cyberpunk 2077 with Overdrive mode enabled in October, but CD Projekt Red has yet to say when the new mode will be released.
