The State Communications Service reminds you how to prepare for network problems and stay connected in critical situations

Since the beginning of October, the Russian military has been actively attacking infrastructure facilities in Ukraine, which, among other things, leads to problems with energy supply. The State Service for Special Communications and Information Protection of Ukraine reminded how to better prepare for critical situations.

To begin with, it is better to limit the consumption of mobile Internet right now, which will reduce the load on base stations:

  • always use fixed communication networks if possible – by the way, some shelters are equipped with a Wi-Fi network;
  • if possible, abandon video in favor of text formats;
  • prefer text messages over calls and video calls;
  • keep all conversations to a minimum, because it is possible that at this very moment someone is trying to use the network to call the rescuers or an ambulance;
  • set traffic limit in application settings, lowest resolution in Youtube video settings;
  • turn off the mode of automatic download of media files in messengers:
    Messenger settings → Data and storage or Media files → Turn off the “Background download” option / in the “Via mobile network” section, turn off “Media auto-download”;
  • if your operator’s network does not work, use national roaming;
  • download all the necessary information into the smartphone memory or write it down on a piece of paper.

Tips for your own safety include:

  • subscribe to channels and accounts in social networks of services that provide assistance, including in your region: State Emergency Service, state and local authorities, etc.
  • install messengers on your phone in advance that work on the principle of a walkie-talkie in order to keep in touch in case the network disappears. The operating range of such applications depends on the Bluetooth generation and signal interference (up to 60-100 m). Agree on using the same app with your neighbors to keep in touch: Bridgefy ( Android and iOS), Walkie Talkie (Android and iOS), Two Way: Walkie Talkie (Android and iOS).
  • do not leave the shelter until the alarm signal ends, even if there is no communication in the shelter;
  • a note on what to do in case mobile communication and the Internet do not work can be downloaded at this link.

In case of need for urgent help, you should remember:

  • to call the emergency services, call 112. If the network capacity is insufficient, send a message to your close ones asking them to call;
  • mention the following data: location (address or local landmarks), what is happening (shelter has collapsed, someone is injured, etc.), how many people are with you, condition of their health (specific illnesses, such as diabetes), injury and time of injury, needs (medicine, food, water)
  • if there is no connection – save the information in drafts and send as soon as the connection appears.

Stay safe!
