Cameron might not direct Avatar 4 himself: news about the next parts of the saga

Avatar 2 is just getting ready for release, and James Cameron is already intriguing with news about the fourth part. As a reminder, The Way of Water is the first of four potential sequels to the 2009 film. In a new interview for Empire, James Cameron discloses details about the next parts.

The director shared that he may not lead the creation of the fourth and fifth Avatar films. The fact that these films are planned was announced back in 2013 and 2016.

“he Avatar films themselves are kind of all-consuming. I’ve got some other things I’m developing as well that are exciting. I think eventually over time – I don’t know if that’s after three or after four – I’ll want to pass the baton to a director that I trust to take over, so I can go do some other stuff that I’m also interested in. Or maybe not. I don’t know,” Cameron vaguely shared his plans.

The director’s question will arise if the fourth and fifth parts are shot. According to Cameron, it depends on the market. The second and third parts are definitely coming out – but he really hopes that the next two parts will also be created, because “it’s one big story”. Regarding the fourth film, the director especially expresses admiration.

“Movie four is a corker. It’s a motherfucker. I actually hope I get to make it,” says Cameron.

He’s not worried about criticism of the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water, or even about the movie’s three-hour length, which might turn some viewers off. According to him, those who binge watch TV for eight hours should not complain about such length.

I’ve watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row. Here’s the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: It’s okay to get up and go pee,” he commented ironically.

We remind you that the second part of “Avatar: The Way of Water” will be released on December 15 this year.
